Privacy Policy

This privacy policy explains what data the app “Synapse Chat for Apple TV” (hereinafter “the app”) processes on your Apple TV device. The app is a client for the standalone server “Synapse”, operated at synapse.schaefer.zone.

2. What data the Apple TV app collects
2.1 Account data
- Email address — login identifier.
- Password — encrypted (hash) exclusively on the Synapse server.
Note: On Apple TV, login is typically done via the Apple TV input or via an AirPlay-supported iPhone keyboard. No biometrics are queried.
2.2 Chat content
All chat messages and metadata are stored exclusively on the Synapse server you choose. The app buffers messages locally in the tvOS sandbox storage to facilitate scrolling. On logout the cache is cleared.
2.3 Push token (optional)
On tvOS, the app can notify you about new AI responses via the Apple Push Notification Service (APNs). The device-specific token is transmitted to the Synapse server and removed on logout or uninstall.
2.4 Technical metadata
- Apple TV model and tvOS version
- App version and preferred display language
- Last-seen timestamp (for online status)
3. What the Apple TV app does NOT collect
✓ No location data
Apple TV has no GPS, and the app does not query any location-related data.
✓ No contact data
No access to contacts, since tvOS does not provide this API to third-party apps.
✓ No photo or media data
The app does not read the photo library and cannot capture media.
✓ No microphone or camera access
The app does not use any microphone or camera API. Voice input is handled exclusively via the Siri Remote / iOS keyboard and is processed by tvOS itself.
✓ No tracking data
No advertising SDKs, no analytics tools, no IDFA.
4. Legal basis (Art. 6 GDPR)
- Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR — Performance of contract (provision of the chat service).
- Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — Legitimate interests (security, troubleshooting).
- Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR — Consent for push notifications (revocable in tvOS Settings → Notifications).
5. Disclosure to third parties
Personal data is disclosed to third parties only:
- to Apple Inc. for the delivery of push notifications via APNs,
- where required by law.
With the exception of the push token (which is transmitted to Apple in the USA and protected there by Standard Contractual Clauses), there is no transfer to countries outside the EU/EEA.
6. Retention period
Account data and chat content are stored until you delete your account. When you log out of the Apple TV app, the local cache is cleared immediately.
7. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the following rights:

8. Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority about the processing.
9. Security
All communication between the Apple TV app and the Synapse server takes place over HTTPS (TLS 1.2+). Passwords are hashed with bcrypt.
10. Changes to this privacy policy
We reserve the right to adapt this privacy policy. The current version is always available at synapse.schaefer.zone/privacy_appletv.
